Sometimes when you live here, it’s easy to forget just how special this part of Western Australia really is.
The towering karri forests. The Yeagarup Dunes. Quiet rivers winding through the bush. Local produce, wineries and country towns where people still stop and say hello.
Recently, those experiences were shared with an international audience when the Southern Forests featured in a series of travel articles.
These articles were written by Peter Pfänder following his Tourism WA media famil through Perth and Australia’s South West along the South West Edge region in May 2026.
One of the articles focused on the journey through Pemberton and the Southern Forests, describing the dramatic transition from ancient karri forest to the vast sands of the Yeagarup Dunes. During the visit, Graeme had the opportunity to share some of the landscapes and stories that make this region so unique.
The resulting articles reached more than 80,000 readers and helped introduce the Southern Forests to travellers looking for authentic experiences, spectacular scenery and destinations beyond the usual tourist trail.
For our region, that kind of exposure matters. We are proud to be part of it.
Every visitor who discovers the Southern Forests supports local cafés, accommodation providers, attractions, wineries, producers and small businesses. It helps put Pemberton, Manjimup and the wider region on the map for travellers who may never have heard of us before.
This visit was made possible through Tourism WA’s media famil programme, with support from DBCA, who assisted by waiving national park entry fees for the visit. We appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes to bring travel writers into regional Western Australia and help share places like Pemberton and the Southern Forests with new audiences.

We’re proud to see the Southern Forests continuing to earn recognition as one of Western Australia’s most rewarding places to explore.
