  • It’s March fly season - bring a chicken.

March or Marsh flies, which include species commonly known as horse flies and deer flies, exhibit specific behaviors and preferences in their feeding and breeding habits, particularly their attraction to Marri blossom and their need to suck blood. Attraction to Marri Blossom Floral Nectar as an Energy Source: Marri blossoms, from the Marri tree (Corymbia calophylla), are significant sources of nectar. Many insects, including March/Marsh flies, are attracted to these blossoms for the nectar, which provides them with a high-energy food source. The nectar's sweetness and its nutritional content make it an ideal energy source for adult flies, especially the males and non-biting females, which primarily feed on nectar and pollen. Ecological Role: The attraction of these flies to Marri blossom plays a part in the ecosystem's pollination network. While feeding on the nectar, the flies inadvertently carry pollen from one flower to another, aiding in the pollination process. This ecological interaction highlights the role of March/Marsh flies beyond their nuisance to humans. Blood-Sucking Behavior Nutritional Need for Reproduction: Female March/Marsh flies require a blood meal for reproduction. The protein and iron found in blood are essential for the development of their eggs. This biological need drives the females to seek out mammals, including humans, for the blood necessary for their reproductive success. Thermoregulation and Attraction Cues: These flies are adept at detecting warmth, carbon dioxide, and other chemicals emitted by potential hosts, including humans. These cues guide them to their targets. Once a suitable host is found, they use their specially adapted mouthparts to cut through the skin and access the blood. Evolutionary Adaptation: The blood-sucking behavior is an evolutionary adaptation that allows the female flies to obtain the nutrients needed for their eggs. This adaptation ensures the continuation of their species by maximizing the chances of reproductive success. Understanding these behaviors sheds light on the complex ecological roles of March/Marsh flies and the evolutionary adaptations that have enabled their survival. While their attraction to Marri blossom reflects their role in the ecosystem's pollination processes, their blood-sucking behavior is driven by the reproductive needs of the females. Both behaviors underscore the intricate balance between these insects and their environment, highlighting the importance of considering ecological impacts in pest management strategies. So, why bring a chicken? They love March flies - tasty crunchy and sweet! More conventional Preventative Measures Wear Light-Colored Clothing: March/Marsh flies are attracted to dark colors, so wearing light-colored clothing can make you less appealing to these flies. Opt for whites, beiges, or pastels when dressing for outdoor activities. Avoid Blue Clothing: Specifically, these flies are known to be attracted to blue, so it’s advisable to avoid wearing blue clothing when you are in areas where these flies are active. Use Repellent Sprays: A mixture of Dettol and baby oil has been anecdotally recommended by some as a repellent for various biting insects, including March/Marsh flies. While not a commercially marketed insect repellent, this mixture is thought to create a slippery and unappealing surface for these flies, potentially deterring them from landing and biting. However, it's important to test the mixture on a small skin area first to ensure there's no allergic reaction. For a more conventional approach, use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus for effective protection. Protective Clothing: In addition to light-colored clothing, wearing long sleeves, pants, and hats can physically block flies from reaching your skin. Clothing treated with permethrin, an insect repellent, can offer additional protection. First Aid for Bites Clean the Area: Immediately wash the bite site with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection. Cold Compress: Apply a cold pack or a cold, wet cloth to the bite area to reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Avoid Scratching: Scratching the bite can increase the risk of infection. If the bite is itchy, apply a topical antihistamine or a calamine lotion to soothe the itchiness. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: If the bite is particularly painful, over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can provide relief. Monitor for Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, bites can cause severe allergic reactions. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or mouth, or a rash spreading beyond the bite site. If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. Environmental Considerations While employing these preventative measures and first aid practices, it’s also important to consider the environmental impact of your actions. Use insect repellents responsibly by following the manufacturer's instructions and applying them in moderation. By taking these steps, you can enjoy the great outdoors this March.

  • Annual Beach Cleanup - 10th Anniversary!!

Pemberton Discovery Tours is thrilled to announce the 10th anniversary of our annual beach clean-up event, happening on the 4th and 5th of November this year. This monumental occasion marks a decade of dedicated community effort. Over the past nine years, we've collected over 8000kg of rubbish, almost 20,000 litres in volume, 83km of rope, with the assistance of 220 volunteers and counted almost 30,000 pieces of rubbish. WOW! After the success of last year's effort, where an astonishing 1000kg of rubbish was collected, we are calling on the community to join us once again as we tackle the ongoing issue of litter on our beautiful beaches. In collaboration with Trackcare WA, we will be returning to Callcup and Yeagarup Beaches. Last year's clean-up showed a significant improvement in Yeagarup's cleanliness, but the fight against littering continues. Your participation will help us make an even more considerable difference this year. The 2022 clean-up brought forth a disappointing discovery of cans and bottles left behind by campers and fisher people. But with the 10c can collection initiative and ongoing fundraising by our local schools, there's now an even stronger reason to keep our community clean and free of litter. We invite all community members, including schools, businesses, and local families, to participate in this essential environmental effort. Let's keep the momentum going and prioritise the preservation of our natural surroundings. A special thanks to Grant and the rest of the team from Trackcare WA for organising and coordinating our volunteers, Parks and Wildlife for trailer hire and signage, Shire of Manjimup for dump access, Tangaroa Blue for data collection, and Keep Australia Beautiful Council for facilitating the necessary logistics. This year, join us for a fulfilling weekend dedicated to protecting the environment we all cherish. Sunday morning we will be departing from the Crossings Bakery at 9 am. Limited seats are available; however, tag along opportunities exist – it's a great way to test out your 4WD! Book online here https://tinyurl.com/yeagarup. Contact Toni & Graeme at Pemberton Discovery Tours to get involved. Together, let's make a difference and ensure that our beautiful beaches remain clean and safe for everyone to enjoy 😊

  • Corporate, team building exclusive experiences

Are you trying to find something unique, creative and memorable for your next work event? We have had the opportunity to create some pretty amazing experiences for groups here in Pemberton and would love to share what we have done and their feedback with you. We recently hosted a group of 10 managers from around Australia at the Pemberton Lodge, packaging their meals, tours, competitions in a bespoke itinerary made it an easy and unique experience for them. Please note the lodge has now sold. This company was looking to create a more inclusive team, especially considering the distance between their offices, an increase in zoom and online meetings and lack of face to face interactions. Getting together in person creates meaningful conversations and shared experiences that can help improve your companies strategic decisions. Example bespoke Pemberton itineraries. Another group we recently hosted searched for a meaningful nature experience for their team of enthusiastic developers. It was a large company whose growth has been exponential so building that strong team was important to management. They found us online and together we created a bespoke itinerary for their company, resourcing other operators from our region which included local bus drivers, hiking guides, food outlets, our team and other family members (of course). This created a massive Pemberton experience which the staff were immersed into; forests, flowers, dunes, our stunning coastline and local delicious food. Including a natural walk through the forests via waterfalls and back to their location it gave them an insight into the native flora, fauna, geology and natural biodiversity which we know will be included in future developments. We are honoured to host this group and excited to see their future endeavours. Another young company who is striving ahead in content creation and social media joined us recently for an immersive wine experience. Once again we created a bespoke itinerary and managed a side trip to the pub to catch the end of the grand final before enjoying a Pemberley wine experience before heading back to Ampersand. It was a memorable day filled with incredible food, stunning scenery, my bad taste in music, laughs and fantastic wine. Thanks for joining us!! #Soperth If you are interested in hosting your next work event, unique Christmas function or promotion here in Pemberton, we would love to make it unique, so please contact us. It's always a good idea to send an email describing your thoughts, the dates and any background - and the best time for us to call you back! Here are some ideas: Unique 4WD experiences (and tag along tours) Ecotourism biodiversity tours Bespoke wine tours Transport, Bib track and Munda Biddi support and bush walks. Accommodation We work with all the local accommodation houses as well as: Pemberton Lodge (now closed) Yeagarup Hut - 4WD accessible only camping hut WA Wilderness - bush camping in the Warren National Park where all you do is turn up and enjoy! We love hosting companies and creating a more cohesive team so look forward to your enquiry.

  • Happy 25th Birthday Bibbulmun Track!

It's the 25th anniversary of the full Bibbulmun Track and to celebrate, the foundation have organised an end to end walk with an extraordinary group of members. They arrived in Pemberton Thursday 17th August 2023 Lead by legend guide and Event Manager, Steve Sertis, the kids from St Joseph's Primary lead the walkers on a parade through town to the Sportsclub where townsfolk and invited guests enjoyed a drink, a chat and sausage sizzle with the tired but happy walkers. Ken from the foundation, Jane Kelspie MLA and John Mackenzie from Parks and Wildlife spoke highly about the influence the trail has on country towns. Acknowledging the townsfolk and community with a special print certificate which was presented to the Pemberton Visitors Centre Manager, Petula. The track has been around for a while - it was originally started in the 80's but wasn't until 1998 that the full trail from Kalamunda to Albany was opened. Pemberton Discovery Tours have been offering track transfers for the past 23 years and have enjoyed discovering the seasonal nooks and crannies that make the trail so interesting. • Delicious, beautiful, friendly, yes genuine!

When the Southern Forests Food Council chose 'Genuinely' as the tag for our region, they got it spot on. When Lani from the Pemberton Sports Club asked me to create a wine tour for her and a couple of colleagues in the industry. I contacted a few of the wineries so she could try their wines and see if it's what they wanted for the bar. We were also fortunate enough to pick up Joanne and her team from the Pemberton Hotel so it was a great group of industry with lots of chatting on board the vehicle with plenty of common ground. Our first top was a visit to Silkwood and George, Brandon and Ed pulled out all stops to make sure that our experience was nothing short of amazing. I won't say they forced us to try the food, but when we got there they made us sit down and enjoy the spread they put on for us (with no complaints from me!). It's highly recommended if you're coming to the region to book in advance - the views are stunning, the food, the most amazing you can imagine and the wine is plentiful and excellent. After our degustation, we rolled out of Silkwood and headed to Pemby. Now Pemberley of Pemberton is an iconic winery in the region. They are more a vineyard as they don't actually produce their own wine, but sell it around the state to other people who need a bit of Pemberton magic in their wine. This also means that the best winemakers are used to make their wines labelled under the Pemberley label. If you get a chance to join them for a wine tasting, then do it. But make sure you have a driver. We try to visit Pemberley on our wine experiences and it is an amazing experience where you are sitting down with this generous family to try their wines and the food that's growing on the property. It's advisable to go with your friends as groups are preferred, and also if you're not intending to buy then please don't take up their valuable time, the wine experience is not their full-time job. They are busy farmers and take the opportunity to relax and sell their wine in small bespoke groups. If you are after a tasting experience only we recommend purchasing their wine at any of the Bottle Shops in Pemberton. This is a place where you go to stock up your cellar and have a great time in doing it. Like we did - we were so spoilt to have the whole family pop in to say hi, this included Des the newest edition of less than 2 weeks old and cute as a button! Although we didn't make it this time, Ampersand Estates is the new kid on the block, and what they offer is absolutely stunning, delicious, and decadent. The winery is located at the old Donnelly River Winery which is around halfway between Pemberton and Nannup on bass Highway. All the buildings on the property have been renovated to the highest standard with windows facing onto the spectacular views encompassing the vineyard, the valley and forests of the National Park and Donnelly River surrounding the vineyard. Corrie and Melissa and team did not go in half-hearted, with strong ties to the Crown Towers, and a helipad now built on location. It offers a quick link to the city for visitors travelling from Perth, interstate, and overseas. Whilst you're there, try the selection of wines, or if you're into Gins and vodkas, then we highly recommend Rainfall, which is the gin distillery that has been developed on the property. The tasting paddles are an additional cost but definitely worth the drive out there, you can order a platter to share (advanced bookings please!) On occasion, they do have arrangements with different restaurant tours to provide other food options, including pizzas. Favourites like Mountford Winery and Tangletoe Cidery are open and definitely worth a visit. If you're on the wine trail, they offer tasting paddles in their beautifully handmade mud brick cellar door with its rustic charm, gallery upstairs and huge fireplace. It's the perfect place to sit and discuss the finer things in life. They have also created a truffle liquor which is a favourite for many this time of year. Another of our favourites is Hidden River Estate winery. They offer at unique twist to normal winery food in a beautiful setting. Don't expect simple the food is delicious, unique and there have a good selection of wine available with cocktails and local beer on tap.

  • An interview with Carbon Neutral

For many years, we have been investing in carbon offsetting our business; by either contributing to projects run in our community, ticking the 'carbon offset' box on any tour or transport we take, planting trees on our own project (see our story here) or using companies like Carbon Neutral to ensure we are compliant. Carbon Neutral was established in the early 2000's and we have woven a relationship with them stretching back to the early years, prior to us purchasing our property in Dumbleyung. Our Dumbleyung property is near the Gondwana Link project (A future post), so any plantings we do contribute to creating a corridor between the South west corner and Kalgoorlie. The Carbon Neutral project that is of most interest, and why we are meeting with Joe today is the Wilyun Pools project. It is around 100km East of Albany and is a biodiverse reforestation project that aligns with the values that led to us choosing to purchase land and plant trees ourselves. Joe is the Partnerships Manager at Carbon Neutral and was happy to chat with us about how we could spread the message; we hope this post gives you incentive to offset your next holiday (or a tree or three makes a great present for the person who has everything!). Thank you for your time today I wanted to send a quick email to recap the highlights of our meeting today regarding the Wilyun Pools Project. It was great to connect and discuss the contribution your tourism company can make towards conservation efforts. First and foremost, I'd like to emphasise the significance of the Wilyun Pools biodiverse reforestation carbon offsetting project. This initiative aims to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of Wilyun Pools, ensuring its sustainability for future generations. By participating in this project, we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment and support the delicate ecosystem of Wilyun Pools. By enabling your customers to purchase trees, your company actively engages them in environmental conservation and fosters a sense of shared responsibility. I'm excited about the positive impact we can create together through this collaboration.
